Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain
This is the full 2-hour PBS documentary.
It begins by describing conditions in Spain prior to the Muslim conquest (fall of Rome to Visigoths, long history of Jews in Spain, etc.), and follows the story all the way through the Reconquista and eventual expulsion of the Muslims.
It’s very well done and doesn’t paint a falsely rosy picture, IMO. It’s also interspersed with commentary by various scholars of different faiths, including Imam Rauf. See the full list here to learn more about them.
If you have time, hurry up and watch it before it disappears!
Here’s a snippet from the description on the PBS site:
Perhaps no other period of European history sheds so much light on our current encounter with extremism. In the story of Islamic Spain, we see what heights may be achieved when adherents to each of these three faiths join together to forge a common culture and, by contrast, how absolutists and narrow minded ideologues with their crusades and jihads may divide and bring down a creative, pluralist society forever.
